The Independence Day movie characters may have been a bit surprised at the success this sci-fi disaster film became. Made for a mere 75 million, the film became a massive success, grossing over 800 million worldwide.

Captain Steven Hiller

Coming off the critical success of Six Degrees of Separation and the box office success of Bad Boys, actor Will Smith was tapped to take the starring role as Marine Corps. F/A-18 Hornet Pilot Captain Steven Hiller.

Bill Pullman's character of President of the United States, Thomas Whitmore, is a former Gulf War fighter pilot. During one of the climactic scenes in the film, President Whitmore and his family narrowly escape the White House on Air Force One just seconds before the aliens decimate the entire building.

Jeff Goldblum takes on the role as MIT graduate David Levinson. Working on satellites for a cable company, Levinson discovers the impending attack and invasion of aliens in the United States.

Oscar Award winning actress Mary McDonnell took on the role of First Lady Marilyn Whitmore in the Independence Day movie characters cast. At the time of the alien invasion, First Lady Whitmore is in Los Angeles, where she ends up meeting up with Vivica A. Fox's character, Jasmine Dubrow.

In the film, Vivica A. Fox is the love interest of Captain Steve Hiller. An exotic dancer and single parent, Jasmine, her child and First Lady Whitmore are among those who survived the alien attacks in Los Angeles.

Played by actor Judd Hirsch, Julius Levinson is the father of Jeff Goldblum's character David Levinson.

Taking on the role of the White House Communications director is actor Margaret Colin. Spano has been working in the film and television industry since 1979.

Taking on the role of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is veteran actor Robert Loggia. General Grey is close with President Whitmore and one of the most trusted members on his staff

Randy Quaid plays the hapless character of Russell Case. Case, a Vietnam vet, is currently working as a crop duster and is portrayed in the film as an alcoholic struggling to make ends meet for his family. Case also claims to have been abducted by aliens in the past.

Played by actor James Rebhorn, Albert Nimziki is the Secretary of Defense in the Independence Day movie characters cast.
