About the Top 10 Chick Flicks
Almost every girl-and some guys-have their own top 10 chick flicks (and in the case of some of those guys, those lists are top secret!). The list consists of romance, comedy, fairy tale, and empowerment for women. They're most often stories that prove that love conquers all. Some are worthy of a hearty laugh and others are bittersweet. Some are chick flicks to watch with your girlfriends or your mom; others are chick flicks you could persuade your boyfriend or spouse to watch.
1. When Harry Met Sally
This 1989 movie featured Billy Crystal as Harry Burns, and Meg Ryan as Sally Albright, and questions the ability for a man and a woman to form and continue a completely platonic relationship without ever becoming intimately involved.
2. Ghost
Who can forget the Ghost pottery scene? This 1990 film won two Oscars and featured Patrick Swayze as Sam Wheat and Demi Moore as his love interest, Molly Jensen. The love between the two keeps Sam on Earth long enough to protect Molly after the botched mugging that results in his murder and bring to light what really happened. Sam tries to contact Molly through psychic Oda May Brown (played by Whoopie Goldberg), who didn't even know her abilities were real.
3. Legally Blonde
In 2001's Legally Blonde, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) proves that beauty and brains do come in the same package. In the beginning of the movie, she's a fun-loving sorority girl intent on marrying her college sweetheart, Warner Huntington (Matthew Davis). When he dumps her instead of proposing marriage, telling her she's "too blonde" and not serious enough, she embarks on a journey to Harvard Law School to follow him and prove that she's got the smarts to be what he wants long-term. While she's there, she makes discoveries about her capabilities and finds true love.
4. Dirty Dancing
Dirty Dancing came out in 1987 but it's still a must-see for women (and quite a few men) today. If you love dance, forbidden romance, and a little bit of scandal, you'll probably enjoy this classic. It's set in the 1960s and 16-year-old Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) accompanies her prestigious family on a vacation in the Catskills. She falls for the camp dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), and becomes his dance partner when his current one can no longer handle the job. Her future takes a different course from the one her family had always planned for her.
5. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey work together as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry to weave this 2003 tale about two people who should probably never be together, but fall in love against their own intentions. Andie Anderson is a magazine writer focusing on a story about how to lose a guy in 10 days, while Benjamin Barry unwittingly becomes a "victim" of her story. He becomes involved with a woman of his female co-workers'/competitors' choice, Andie, when he bets them that he can make any woman fall in love with him if they will give him a major advertising account when he wins.
6. What Women Want
This 2000 film features Helen Hunt as Darcy McGuire and Mel Gibson as Nick Marshall. Powerful executive and playboy Nick is accidentally electrocuted when a hairdryer falls into a bathtub while trying out female products such as makeup and pantyhose. As a result, Nick is granted the ability to read women's minds and give them exactly what they want. Darcy McGuire got the promotion he wanted at work, so she's the first victim of his new ability and he promotes Darcy's ideas as his own. Predictably, since this is a chick flick, romance steals the show.
7. The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride from 1987 is a fairy tale complete with a beautiful kidnapped princess, an evil prince, and a childhood boyfriend who must sweep in with friends he's collected on the way and save the princess from a devastating marriage to the horrible Prince Humperdinck.
8. The Notebook
Make sure you have your tissues on hand if you decide to watch The Notebook (2004) for the first time. Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, The Notebook is a story of finding the love of a lifetime. Rachel McAdams plays Allie Hamilton, the girl torn between two loves. Ryan Gosling plays Noah Calhoun and Tim Ivey is Rower. Both men are vying for Allie's heart.
9. Breakfast at Tiffany's
This is a 1961 film featuring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly and George Peppard as Paul "Fred" Varjak. It's another story of two people who were unlikely to fall for each other, a pampered socialite with hidden neuroses, and a writer in her building. Holly is determined to marry another man, but a turn of events ruins the match and sends her back into Paul's arms. The love story is set against a backdrop of mobsters, drug rings, wild parties, and Holly's annulled marriage.
10. Ever After
Ever After is a Cinderella story, and what girly-girl can't appreciate one of those? The 1998 film features Drew Barrymore as Danielle de Barbarac, the "Cinderella" character who lives with her stepmother and two stepsisters. She accidentally meets Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) when he steals a horse from her home and she attempts to stop him. With the help of genius Leonardo da Vinci, a new friend of Danielle's, the prince and Danielle get their chance at love.
Regardless of which emotions the chick flicks bring out in you, the top 10 chick flicks are movies you can watch over and over and enjoy every time.
